Why Real Nappies?
Whatever you choose to call them –
reusable nappies,
washable nappies,
cloth nappies,
terry nappies –
we want to provide you with pretty much all you need for your baby to be a cloth
nappy wearer. Be that all the time, when you’re at home or just when you are
feeling virtuous! We would also love to help create a gift for a new mum or
baby, just let us know a bit about them plus your budget and we’ll make some
suggestions.
Our aim is for you to find converting to Cloth Nappies as easy as possible so
you can have a Nappy Trial, buy great value Starter Packs which include all you
need or top up the nappies you may already be using. Our prescription service is
completely free with no obligation so do take advantage of it. We also have
links to some other websites with really useful information about being a cloth
nappy convert, such as the environmental impact of disposables vs. cloth and
some cost calculations.
And another thing...did you know that lots of local councils are offering an
incentive to families to use washable nappies to reduce waste in landfill? For
example ours offer £30 if you spend £50 or more. There may be criteria to meet
of course but we would be happy to check out your local authority and find out
if they do. We can enclose a letter with your invoice to make it easier for you
to send away and claim your allowance.
I hope you have found this website early in your search for cloth nappies, baby
products and organic clothing. It took me ages trawling through lots of sites,
which is why I wanted to have more of a “one stop shop” so to speak. Nothing too
fancy - just good quality basics. We have also tried as much as possible to
source our products from the UK, some items have travelled further to get here
but they are at a minimum.
Our brands include Tots Bots,
Mother-ease®,
Cut4cloth,
Green People,
Bambo and
Auroma. We are open to your suggestions and would be happy to hear from you,
please see Contact Us for details of how to get in touch.
We want our site to be easy to use, to arm you with the basics of cloth nappy
wearing and for you to try it for yourself. We have provided the information you
need to make a choice and some advice too with links to the people who are
specialists in working out statistics! Please let us know what you think!
About me
When I had our daughter my life was turned upon its head, my thoughts turned to
the food we were eating, the chemicals in the products I used at home, the world
outside and whether I could do anything, however small to make it a better place
for my beautiful baby to grow up in. I read a great book by
Janey Lee Grace
called “Imperfectly Natural Woman” which made a lot of sense to me and prompted
some of the changes I’ve made too. I have tried to change a few things to make a
difference in our home, have joined the Women’s Environmental Network and become
an Ambassador for BabyGROE, just to try and help other people find ways to make
more natural choices. There’s Nappy Love too, as I felt really frustrated that I
had to shop for my baby things in different places. “If you don’t like it, do
something about it” has always been a favourite saying of mine so I‘m trying!
Being Mum to a baby girl and Step Mum to two teenage daughters too, we have a
very busy household and it seemed pretty impractical to decide to add washable
nappies to my household chores list however it has been a great decision. They
are really easy to use and launder and all our family are confident changing
them. We have saved money already and have seen our household waste reduce by
about a third since giving the disposables the boot!
Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t perfect by a mile but we are trying to do our bit
for the environment, our local landfill and our pocket. Some of the things we
have changed to be a bit more eco friendly in our house:
- Turn the TV off at the plug at night
-
Use chemical free toiletries as much as possible, particularly on baby
-
Switch to washable nappies and eco disposables on lazy days
-
Change our cleaning products – never realised how useful vinegar and bicarbonate
of soda could be!
-
Buy organic and/or local where possible. There’s allsorts of arguments for and
against this but I think you know in your own mind what’s right for you and your
family.
-
Get a composter – yet to be up and running as it arrived in October and I didn’t
think that was great composting weather!
If you are keen to change some things in your lives too, you’ll find some places
to start on our links page.
